LLWSC 2008 Newsletter April 6th 2008

Welcome back to Llangorse at the start of the 2008 season!

We have a whole range of events planned for the coming months, including two training weekends, monthly guided walks through the Brecon Beacons, a dedicated SBDA test weekend and a Boat Boot Sale – see Event Details and Calendar below.

There is also a section below on useful information and reminders, including the website and Club equipment .

Please note that Committee Meetings are held on the first Sunday of each month at 11.30 am in the room above Lakeside Shop. Any member is welcome to come, whether they want to listen, participate or offer to help. Alternatively just pass any queries or comments to one of the Committee members who can then raise them at the meetings.

Event Details

Training Days – Steve Glanfield, Thorpe BWSF Instructor, is scheduled to spend two weekends at Llangorse this year for the exclusive use of LLWSC members in any of the disciplines required – water skiing from novice to slalom, trick skis, kneeboarding, wake boarding and barefooting. Members will use their own boats and pay for the lessons they book. Marc Maddison will be managing the training schedules and we'll let you know the dates shortly.

LLWSC Instructor Training Days – we have seven qualified water ski instructors in the club – all of whom are happy to make themselves available for free coaching for members . The instructors are Marc Maddison, Matt Davies, Roland Nicholas, Tony Davis, Cliff Ross, Karen Knowles and, Liz Peddle. To try and encourage more members to take advantage of them, they'll be available for specific training days this year, aswell as for ad hoc requests.

Guided Walks – Derek and Mark Thomas are tackling Killimanjaro in October! As part of their training they'll be walking the Brecon Beacons regularly and will be organising a guided walk each month as a series of fund raising events for the club. Open to all LLWSC members for a nominal charge, these walks will be designed to allow participation at all fitness levels. Just ask Derek (07831 612 703) and look out for notices.

Boat Boot Sale – the ideal opportunity to clear out all those lockers and sheds - and to buy more essential items to fill them with again! The idea is to sell anything related to skiing and ski boats, caravans and any other Llangorse activities and could include unwanted wetsuits, water sports equipment, patio furniture, biking gear (cycling, off- road biking, sports biking and cruiser biking!), canoe gear etc. Due to restrictions on trading on both the Common and the caravan site, and depending on the level on interest, we'll be holding this on the second May Bank Holiday Sunday in the car park at the Village Hall. Mary Burrows will be organising this event.

SBDA – Andy Nelmes is the accredited Ski Boat Driver Principal for LLWSC. If you pass a practical boat driving test and written test you can gain the Ski Boat Driver Award or SBDA. LLWSC recommends that everyone who drives a boat should have their SBDA - it will also reduce your boat insurance premiums. Andy will be running a dedicated SBDA test day this year, so collect your SBDA manuals from him and start swotting!

Competition s – these will be split between Adults and Pikelets (under 18) and run on two successive weekends in August. Keep a look out for timetables and notices in the bar, shop and entrances to Llynffi and Lakeside caravan sites nearer the time. Gareth Edwards will be running the Pikelets competitions and hopefully Peter Sephton, Ali Bannister and Marc Maddison will run the Adults competitions again this year.

BBQs at Lakeside – Mary Burrows will be organising two evening events at Lakeside this year. These may also be themed so hold onto your costumes!

Dinner Dance – we hope to hold this at Baskerville Hall again this year as it was a popular success last year, managed for the second year running by Hazel Housden and Jill Thomason . Date to be confirmed for September/October.
